Research Security: Research Data Management Community of Practice Online
We're back for the new year with a roundtable Thursday, January 29, 11 AM - 12 PM on research security: balancing risk and open science through data management.
Public health, space and satellite technology, personal data, nuclear fusion, and digital infrastructure are at the cutting edge of Canada's research landscape. They're also just a few examples of sensitive research of concern: data which could be misused either now or in the future.
Researchers balance many expectations and accountabilities:
- Open data sharing and research integrity
- National research security and cyber security
- Research ethics and keeping participants safe
- Throw into the mix bot attacks; risks to researcher safety from governments and corporations alike; and a fraught relationship with a nation that hosts a lot of our digital infrastructure?
These aren't conflicting...but it's a lot to juggle! Jumping off from the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA)'s report Balancing Research Security and Open Science, we'll be joined by researchers and IT professionals to start unpacking. Around the table this month:
- Dr. Kelly Cobey (expert panel member) and Dr. Vasa Lukich, project staff for the CCA Balancing Research Security and Open Science report
- Jessie Cumming, Director, Research Security Risk
- Dr. Karin Stephenson and Derek Cappon, Nuclear Operations and Facilities
- Dr. Mackenzie Salt, postdoctoral fellow with the McMaster Autism Research Team (who gave this great talk on mitigating bots and bad actors)
- McMaster Information Security Services
